Equipment Function

What Role Does PTFE Play in Pumps & Valves?

Pumps and valves control, isolate and move liquids or gases while repeatedly loading sealing and sliding interfaces. PTFE is commonly used at valve seats, seals, O-rings, bushings, rings and other internal component locations where fluid contact, friction and sealing performance must be considered together.

Material selection depends on the media, pressure, temperature, movement, cycle frequency, load and geometry of the part. Virgin PTFE may suit some applications, while filled PTFE grades can be considered where wear, creep or dimensional stability are more demanding.

Why PTFE

Why PTFE Is Used in Pump & Valve Components

Pump and valve applications combine sealing, pressure, movement and fluid exposure, so material performance must be considered as a system rather than as a single property.

01

Chemical Resistance

PTFE is widely used in fluid-contact components exposed to corrosive or chemically aggressive media.

02

Low Friction

Low friction supports valve seats, stems, seals and bushings where repeated motion occurs.

03

Soft Sealing Interface

PTFE can provide a conformable sealing surface in valve seats, rings and other fluid-control interfaces.

04

Filled Grade Options

Selected filled PTFE grades can improve wear, creep or load performance when the application requires it.

Application Functions

Where PTFE Components Are Used in Pumps & Valves

The same material can perform different jobs depending on whether the component is sealing a valve, guiding a moving part or isolating process media inside a pump.

Valve Applications

PTFE in Valve Assemblies

Valve components must seal fluid paths while allowing controlled opening, closing and stem movement.

Valve Seats

PTFE seats create a sealing interface between valve closure elements and the valve body.

Stem & Sealing Rings

Machined PTFE sealing rings can be used around moving stems and internal sealing locations.

O-Rings & Static Seals

PTFE O-rings and seals support static sealing at selected valve joints and internal interfaces.

Bushings & Guides

Low-friction PTFE bushings can guide stems and moving parts while reducing sliding resistance.

Pump Applications

PTFE in Pump Assemblies

Pump components may combine fluid contact, sealing, movement and repeated mechanical loading.

Pump Seals & Seal Rings

PTFE sealing components are used where pump assemblies require chemical resistance and controlled friction.

Bushings & Sleeves

PTFE bushings and sleeves can provide guidance and low-friction support around moving pump components.

Wear & Backup Rings

Rings can support sealing systems, spacing and wear control in selected pump assemblies.

Custom Wetted Components

Drawing-based PTFE parts can be manufactured for equipment-specific fluid-contact interfaces and internal geometry.

Material Selection

Virgin vs Filled PTFE for Pumps & Valves

Pump and valve components often need more than chemical resistance. Pressure, cycling, friction, wear and creep can influence the choice between virgin and filled PTFE.

01

Virgin PTFE

Often considered where broad chemical resistance and low friction are the primary requirements and mechanical loading is moderate.

02

Glass-Filled PTFE

Can improve wear, creep resistance and dimensional stability in selected seats, bushings and other mechanically loaded components.

03

Carbon / Graphite Filled PTFE

May be considered for dynamic applications where friction, wear or thermal behavior are important design factors.

Filled PTFE should not be selected from mechanical performance alone. The filler system can change chemical compatibility and other material behavior, so the exact grade should be reviewed against both the process media and the mechanical duty.

Beyond Chemical Resistance

What Determines Pump & Valve Component Performance?

Chemical compatibility is only one part of the selection process. Pump and valve components also face pressure, movement, cycling, wear and sustained loading.

01

Media

Confirm the exact liquid or gas, concentration and any cleaning media.

02

Pressure

Review operating pressure, pressure differential and sealing load.

03

Temperature

Check continuous and peak temperatures at the actual component location.

04

Motion & Cycling

Consider stem travel, shaft movement, cycle frequency and start-stop behavior.

05

Friction & Wear

Evaluate sliding surfaces, mating materials, speed and expected wear.

06

Creep & Geometry

Define sustained load, wall thickness, sealing faces and critical dimensions.
